How is the NPORS Telescopic Handler course assessed?

The NPORS Telehandler course is tailored to ensure learners' proficiency in operating telehandlers, with a strong emphasis on understanding relevant health and safety regulations. The assessment process encompasses the following components:

Theory Assessment:

  • Written Exam: Learners are required to complete a written examination that tests their knowledge of telehandler operation, relevant health and safety legislation, and best practices in machinery operation. The exam may include multiple-choice questions, short-answer questions, and scenario-based questions.
  • Verbal Questions: To deepen the evaluation, verbal questions may be utilized to assess the candidate’s understanding of specific topics or scenarios.

Practical Assessment:

  • Practical Demonstration: Candidates must demonstrate their proficiency in operating a telehandler. This involves conducting pre-operational checks, managing the machine under various conditions, and applying necessary safety measures.
  • Observation: An assessor monitors the candidates during practical tasks to ensure they adhere to proper procedures and display the essential skills and competencies.

Overall, the NPORS Telehandler course provides a comprehensive and rigorous evaluation process, assessing both theoretical knowledge and practical skills to ensure candidates are fully capable of operating telehandlers safely and efficiently.

Certification

  • Existing NPORS Card Holders Without (S)NVQ:

Operators without the required (S)NVQ qualifications will be issued a Trained Operator card, valid for two years. During this period, they are expected to enroll in and successfully complete the relevant (S)NVQ for the categories of plant equipment listed on their card.

  • Existing NPORS Card Holders With (S)NVQ:

Operators holding the necessary (S)NVQ qualifications will receive a Competent Operator card, valid for five years. Additionally, they will be provided with a CPD record/operator logbook to track their continuous professional development and operational hours in the workplace.

FAQs

How long does NPORS Telehandler last?

The validity of an NPORS Telehandler certification can vary depending on the type of card issued:

  • Trained Operator CardValid for two years. Operators are expected to gain additional experience and complete any required qualifications during this period to upgrade to a Competent Operator card.
  • Competent Operator Card: Valid for five years after which a refresher or re-assessment might be required to renew the certification.

These durations ensure that operators maintain current knowledge and skills in line with evolving industry standards and regulations. It's always good to check with the specific training provider or NPORS for the most up-to-date information regarding certification validity.

What license do I need for a telehandler?

To operate a telehandler in the UK, you typically need to obtain specific training and certification from an accredited organisation, such as the National Plant Operators Registration Scheme (NPORS) or the Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS). These certifications confirm that you have the necessary skills and knowledge to operate a telehandler safely and effectively.

Here’s a brief overview of what each scheme offers:

  • NPORS: NPORS offers a flexible, competent operator card (or a trained operator card if you are newer to the role and haven’t completed an NVQ or SVQ). This certification involves both practical and theoretical assessments.
  • CPCS: CPCS provides a Red Trained Operator Card for beginners, which requires you to complete an NVQ or SVQ within two years to upgrade to a Blue Competent Operator Card.

Both types of certification involve completing a training course that covers practical skills, safety regulations, and theoretical knowledge necessary for operating a telehandler. The course typically includes a written and practical test.

It's important to ensure that your certification is recognised by the employer and is appropriate for the specific type of telehandler and the nature of the work you will be undertaking.

How much does a Telehandler course cost?

The cost of obtaining a telehandler ticket through the NPORS Telehandler course can vary depending on several factors:

  • Training Provider: Different training providers may charge different rates, influenced by their facilities, instructor expertise, and the materials provided.
  • Course Length and Type: Costs can differ significantly between novice, experienced operator, or refresher courses. Novice courses usually offer more extensive training and, as a result, may be priced higher.
  • Location: Geographic location also affects pricing; courses offered in urban centres may incur higher fees due to increased operational costs.
  • Group Training: Discounts may be available for group bookings, which could reduce costs for companies training multiple employees simultaneously.

As a general guideline, prices for a telehandler course could range from £300 to £1000. Longer, more detailed novice courses tend to be at the higher end of this spectrum, while shorter courses for experienced operators or refresher sessions may cost less.
