FAQs

What level is a NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety?

The NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is positioned at Level 3 on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) in the UK, which is equivalent to an A-level. On the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), it is also considered a Level 3 qualification. This level indicates that the qualification provides a solid foundation in health and safety management, suited for managers, supervisors, and operational staff.

Is NEBOSH better than IOSH?

Choosing between NEBOSH (National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health) and IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health) training depends on your career goals, your current role, and what you aim to achieve in the field of health and safety. Both qualifications are highly respected but serve different purposes and cater to different professional needs.

IOSH Courses:

  • Target Audience: IOSH courses are often tailored for managers and supervisors across various sectors who need a basic understanding of health and safety practices. These courses are typically shorter and more introductory than NEBOSH courses.
  • Course Objectives: IOSH training focuses on why health and safety are important, and how to integrate safety measures into daily operations without in-depth management systems. The most popular IOSH course is the "Managing Safely" course.
  • Duration and Depth: Courses are shorter (often between 1-4 days) and less intensive, designed for broad application across roles and industries.

NEBOSH Courses:

  • Target Audience: NEBOSH courses are designed for those seeking a more comprehensive and detailed understanding of health and safety management, often aimed at those pursuing a career specifically in health and safety.
  • Course Objectives: NEBOSH provides a thorough education in health and safety, covering more rigorous content such as legislation, hazard control, and risk assessment at a deeper level. It is considered a more formal qualification than IOSH and is often required for health and safety management roles.
  • Duration and Depth: NEBOSH courses are more extensive and can take several weeks to complete. The NEBOSH National General Certificate is the most widely held health and safety qualification in the UK.

Career Impact and Recognition:

  • IOSH: IOSH courses are excellent for managers and supervisors who need to understand the essentials of health and safety practices to manage teams effectively.
  • NEBOSH: NEBOSH qualifications are often essential for those looking to specialise in health and safety roles. NEBOSH certificates are typically required for more senior positions in health and safety management, both in the UK and internationally.

Which is Better?

  • Depends on Your Needs: If you need a comprehensive education in health and safety due to the nature of your role or your career ambitions in health and safety, NEBOSH is likely the better option. If you simply need a foundational understanding to enhance your ability to manage teams safely, an IOSH course might be sufficient.
  • Recognition and Progression: For those looking to develop a career specifically in health and safety, NEBOSH is generally more recognised and valued by employers for more specialised roles.

Ultimately, the choice between IOSH and NEBOSH should be based on your specific career requirements, the depth of knowledge you need, and how you plan to use the qualification in your professional life.
