SA002 Underground Safety

Training for Safe Work in Underground Networks

What is the SA002 Underground Safety Course?

The SA002 Underground Safety qualification is specifically aimed at individuals working in telecommunications or similar utility environments, such as fibre network installation and underground surveys. As an entry-level course, it provides essential training for those who need to understand the risks and hazards associated with underground work. The course focuses on two key areas: gas testing and cover lifting. It equips delegates with the knowledge and skills to identify underground hazards and manage the associated risks. Additionally, it ensures compliance with industry health and safety regulations, helping individuals work safely in the underground network. This course is a basic requirement for further training in underground operations and safety.

Course Content

What can I expect from the SA002 Underground Safety Course?

The SA002 Underground Safety Course covers the following two modules:

Gas Testing

  • Understand the tools and equipment and safe methods adopted by the industry for testing gas in chambers and operational buildings.
  • Understand the dangers they may face when entering underground chambers or structures.
  • Understand the equipment used by industry for detecting gas.
  • Understand what needs to be done if gas is found.
  • Enable safe working in locations which, potentially, have hazardous gas.
  • Ensure their own safety and the safety of others.
  • Avoid injury to themselves and the public.
  • Understand the legislation and regulations for this type of work.

Cover Lifting

  • Know the associated legislation and regulations.
  • Know how to identify and manage the risks associated with cover lifting.
  • Understand correct manual handling methods.
  • Know how to avoid injury to operatives and the public.
  • Be able to check and use the tools and equipment used in the industry for lifting covers from joint boxes and manholes safely.
  • Know how to identify the different covers used.
  • Be able to remove and replace joint box and carriageway covers safely. (Including structures with multiple covers).
  • Identify polluted water in underground structures in line with environmental requirements.
  • Know how to avoid damage to underground apparatus.
  • Know how to use utility prints to aid in the location of chambers. (optional)

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for the SA002 Underground Safety Course. Access is not restricted based on prior academic attainment, age, employment, geographic location, or any other grounds, promoting equality and accessibility for all.

However, it is important to note that any work on the highway requires an appropriate Street Works qualification to be held by an individual working on-site. Specifically, individuals involved in this type of work must have the qualification to check that the planned provision of footways, traffic lanes, and safety zones meets the requirements set out in the New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA) 1991.

Additionally, for work involving gas testing in the network, individuals must be suitably assessed and accredited to industry and national standards. It is also required that at least one person on-site holds the appropriate Street Works Card to comply with the NRSWA 1991.

Assessment

The SA002 Underground Safety Course is assessed through:

  • Multiple-Choice Theory Test: This test evaluates delegates' understanding of underground safety procedures, gas testing, and cover lifting techniques.
  • Practical Exercises: Delegates will demonstrate their ability to apply safe working practices when accessing and working in underground structures, including performing gas testing and lifting covers safely.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Mandatory PPE for the SA002 Underground Safety Course includes:

  • Safety Boots
  • Safety Helmet
  • Hi-Visibility Vest (Long Sleeve)
  • Appropriate Gloves
  • Clothing suitable for inclement weather (recommended)

Please note: Without the correct PPE, delegates may be refused entry to the course, and charges will still apply.

Certification

Upon successful completion of the course and assessments, delegates will receive the SA002 Underground Safety Certificate, accredited by Smart Awards. This certification confirms competence in underground safety practices, including gas testing and cover lifting. The certificate is valid for three years, after which a refresher course is required to maintain certification.

Please note: This certification does not qualify an individual to enter a confined space. Those who need to enter confined spaces must hold the appropriate qualifications to do so. References to confined spaces in the course are for informational purposes only, highlighting the potential presence of gases and other risks that may be encountered in confined spaces.
