Q021 (DL1) Duct Laying 1

Underground Duct Installation Openreach Approved Qualification

What is the Q021 (DL1) Duct Laying 1 course?

The Q021 (DL1) Duct Laying 1 course is an Openreach accredited training programme designed for engineers and contractors involved in the installation of underground telecommunications infrastructure. This course focuses on equipping learners with the essential skills and knowledge required to safely and competently install Duct 54 and Duct 56 within Openreach's underground network.

Course Content

What can I expect from the Q021 (DL1) Duct Laying 1 training course?

Learners can anticipate a blend of theoretical instruction and practical application during this course. Key components include:

  • Understanding Openreach's Underground Network: Gaining insights into the structure and components of Openreach's underground infrastructure.
  • Duct Installation Techniques: Learning the correct methods for installing Duct 54 and Duct 56, ensuring compliance with Openreach's quality standards and best practices.
  • Safety Protocols: Emphasising adherence to safety procedures to protect both personnel and infrastructure during duct installation activities.
  • Practical Application: Engaging in hands-on exercises that allow learners to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios under expert supervision.

Entry Requirements

Learners are required to meet the following prerequisites before enrolling in the Q021 (DL1) Duct Laying 1 course:

Mandatory Certifications:

  • NRSWA Street Works Qualification – Unit 01: Covers the basics of signing, lighting, and guarding for street works, ensuring that learners can manage and maintain safety standards during street-based operations.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):

Learners must come equipped with the following PPE to ensure safety during the training:

  • High-Visibility (Hi-Vis) Clothing: To ensure visibility in various working environments.
  • Safety Boots: Protective footwear to safeguard against potential hazards.
  • Safety Helmet (with 4-point chin strap): To protect the head from potential impacts, with the chin strap ensuring the helmet remains securely in place.
  • Gloves: To protect hands from abrasions, cuts, and other potential injuries.
  • Eye Protection: Safety glasses or goggles to shield the eyes from debris and other hazards.

Note: Failure to bring the required PPE may result in exclusion from the course, with associated charges still applicable.

Assessment

The assessment process evaluates both theoretical knowledge and practical skills:

  • Theoretical Assessment: Learners will complete a written questionnaire designed to assess their understanding of duct installation practices, safety protocols, and quality standards.
  • Practical Assessment: Learners will undertake hands-on installation tasks within a controlled environment. This assessment evaluates their ability to apply learned techniques, adhere to safety protocols, and meet the established quality standards during actual duct installation scenarios.

Certification

Upon successful completion of both the theoretical and practical assessments, learners will be awarded an Openreach approved accreditation for the Q021 (DL1) module. This certification serves as formal recognition of the individual's competency in installing Duct 54 and Duct 56 within Openreach's underground network, enhancing their professional credentials and expanding their career opportunities in the telecommunications sector.
