CPCS Telescopic Handler (A17E) - Experienced

Endorsement E: Suspended Loads

What is the CPCS A17E Suspended Loads course?

The CPCS A17E Telehandler: Suspended Loads course is specifically designed for experienced telehandler operators requiring formal certification to safely carry out suspended load operations on construction sites. Tailored to reinforce and expand existing operator competencies, the course offers structured training adapted to individual experience and skills.

Primarily focused on the E endorsement (Suspended Loads on Non-Rough Terrain), this specialised training enables operators to confidently perform lifting operations involving suspended loads, while ensuring compliance with rigorous health and safety standards.

The CPCS A17 Telehandler category also includes several additional endorsements to accommodate diverse operational requirements:

  • A – Industrial Telescopic
  • B – Up to 9 Metres
  • C – All Sizes Excluding 360° Slew
  • E – Suspended Loads on Non-Rough Terrain

(Note: Endorsement D has been superseded by CPCS A77.)

This targeted and flexible approach ensures that operators develop essential knowledge and practical skills to handle telehandlers effectively, safely, and efficiently across various construction environments.

Course Content

What can you expect from this CPCS Telehandler: Suspended Loads course?

This specialised course is designed to provide comprehensive training for experienced telehandler operators focusing on the safe and efficient handling of suspended loads. Key areas covered include:

  • Pre-Operational Checks and Machine Preparation
Conduct thorough pre-use inspections and configure the telehandler appropriately for both site and highway travel, ensuring compliance with safety standards.
  • Attaching and Handling Suspended Loads
Learn correct methods for attaching various types of suspended loads, understanding the use of different lifting accessories and ensuring load integrity and security during operations.
  • Stability and Load Dynamics
Understand how factors such as load size, weight, ground conditions, and boom positioning affect the stability of the telehandler, particularly when moving with a raised boom and suspended load.
  • Safe Manoeuvring and Travel Techniques
Develop skills to safely manoeuvre the telehandler over various terrains while carrying suspended loads, including navigating slopes and confined spaces, and responding to environmental challenges.
  • Communication and Signal Use
Effectively collaborate with slingers/signallers by understanding and using standard signals and communication protocols to ensure coordinated and safe load handling.
  • Practical Lifting Exercises
Engage in hands-on training to lift, move, and place loads accurately at designated locations, including placing and removing loads from vehicles, and performing lifts where the load is out of sight.
  • Safety Regulations and Compliance
Gain a thorough understanding of relevant health and safety legislation, operator responsibilities, and best practices to ensure compliance and promote a safe working environment.

By completing this course, participants will be equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to operate telehandlers with suspended loads safely and effectively in various construction settings.

Entry Requirements

Are there any entry requirements for the CPCS Telehandler: Suspended Loads course?

Before enrolling in the CPCS A17E Suspended Loads course, participants must meet the following criteria:

  • Health, Safety, and Environment (HS&E) Test: Participants must have successfully passed the CITB Health, Safety, and Environment Test for Operatives within the last two years prior to attending the course. This ensures that all learners have the fundamental safety knowledge required for operating machinery on construction sites.
  • Previous Telehandler Operational Experience: Due to the specialist nature of suspended load operations, candidates must have sufficient previous experience operating telehandlers. This operational experience ensures participants are adequately prepared to handle the complexities of managing suspended loads.
  • Proficiency in English: Learners must possess an adequate understanding of spoken and written English. This is essential to fully comprehend training instructions, safety guidelines, and assessment criteria, as well as effectively communicate during practical tasks.

These requirements are designed to confirm that all participants are suitably experienced, equipped, and prepared to safely and effectively benefit from the specialised training provided.

Assessment

How is the CPCS Telehandler: Suspended Loads course assessed?

The CPCS A17E Telehandler: Suspended Loads course assessment comprises two main elements designed to thoroughly evaluate participant competence:

  • Theory Test: A written examination assessing participants' knowledge of health and safety regulations, responsibilities specific to suspended load operations, machine controls, lifting procedures, load stability considerations, and operator best practices.
  • Practical Test: A practical assessment where operators demonstrate their ability to safely manage suspended load operations. Tasks include conducting pre-operational checks, correctly attaching and detaching suspended loads, safely manoeuvring the telehandler in various conditions, following signals and communication from slingers/signallers, and positioning suspended loads accurately and safely.

This combination of theoretical understanding and practical skills ensures that participants can operate telehandlers proficiently and safely within suspended load scenarios.

Certification

Upon successfully passing the CPCS technical tests, learners will be issued a Red CPCS Trained Operator Card, which remains valid for two years.

To upgrade to a Blue CPCS Competence Card, learners must gain on-site experience and complete an NVQ Level 2 in Plant Operations, specifically focusing on preparing and operating telescopic handlers within two years. The Blue CPCS Card is renewable every five years.
