What is the EUSR Categories 3, 4 & 5 Course?
The EUSR Categories 3, 4 & 5 course provides learners with the knowledge and assessment required to safely install, inspect and remove excavation support systems, including timber, steel and proprietary systems.
This course is designed for those working in or around excavations where temporary support systems are required to protect workers, maintain excavation stability and reduce the risks associated with ground collapse.
The EUSR scheme has been developed in collaboration with employers and stakeholders from across the energy and utility sector. Training and assessment against each category leads to registration on EUSR, delivered through an Energy & Utility Skills approved programme.

The scheme covers the minimum training and assessment required for those installing, inspecting and removing excavation support systems, and is derived from National Occupational Standards including EUSMUNC07 Excavate and Maintain Holes and Trenches for Utility Networks Construction and COSVR370 Install, Maintain and Remove Temporary Excavation Support.

This course is suitable for anyone who is required to install, inspect, remove, supervise or work around excavation support systems, including:
Entry Requirements
Learners should have a basic understanding of excavation work and site safety. Experience of working in construction, utilities, civils or groundworks is beneficial. Learners must be able to understand course instruction, complete assessments and take part in practical elements where required.
Suitable PPE may be required for the practical elements of the course, such as safety boots, hard hat, hi-vis clothing and gloves.
Assessment
Assessment is completed through an approved Energy & Utility Skills training programme and may include both theory and practical assessment. Learners must demonstrate the required knowledge and competence for the relevant EUSR categories before registration can be awarded.
Certification
Successful delegates will gain EUSR registration for Categories 3, 4 & 5: Install, Inspect & Remove Timber, Steel & Proprietary Support Systems.
EUSR registration is valid for three years for each registration category following successful completion of training and assessment through an Energy & Utility Skills approved programme.
This scheme is also recognised by CITB for short course duration funding purposes and can be offered by Approved Training Organisations.
