Course Content

What can I expect from the SA022 training course?

Learners can anticipate a comprehensive blend of theoretical instruction and practical application during this one-day course. Key components include:

  • Understanding the Purpose of Safe Location and Avoidance: Gaining insights into safe working practices, the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE), typical locations and depths of underground utilities, and the principles of operation for electronic detection equipment.
  • Interpreting Service Drawings and Planning: Learning to carry out risk assessments, interpret utility plans, and plan for safe location and avoidance of underground services.
  • Identifying, Detecting, and Marking Underground Services: Developing skills to conduct visual surveys, use cable avoidance tools to detect and trace services, and accurately mark their locations to prevent harm and damage.
  • Methods of Safe Excavation: Understanding safety considerations during excavation, methods for safely exposing services, identifying exposed utilities, and appropriate reporting procedures for unexpected findings.

The course combines classroom-based learning with practical exercises, ensuring learners can apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios.

Entry Requirements

This qualification is available to anyone over the age of 16. There are no formal barriers restricting access or progression, thereby promoting equality. However, it is expected that learners possess a level of literacy adequate to cope with both the theory and practical assessments.

What personal protective equipment (PPE) is required?

Learners are required to bring the following PPE to ensure safety during the practical components of the training:

  • High-Visibility (Hi-Vis) Clothing: To ensure visibility in various working environments.
  • Safety Boots: Protective footwear to safeguard against potential hazards.
  • Safety Helmet (Hard Hat): To protect the head from potential impacts.
  • Gloves: To protect hands from abrasions, cuts, and other potential injuries.
  • Safety Glasses: To shield the eyes from debris and other hazards.

Note: Failure to bring the required PPE may result in exclusion from the course, with associated charges still applicable.

Assessment

The assessment process evaluates both theoretical knowledge and practical skills:

  • Practical Assessment: Learners are assessed throughout the course by the trainer as they complete practical tasks related to locating and avoiding underground services.
  • Theory Test: A short multiple-choice questionnaire designed to assess understanding of key concepts and procedures. A pass mark of 80% is required to successfully complete the course.

Certification

Upon successful completion of both assessments, learners receive a Smart Awards certificate valid for three years. To maintain certification, individuals must retake the course or attend a refresher course before the expiry date.
