Q020 (DB1) Duct Blockages

Clearing Underground Duct Blockages

What is the Q020 (DB1) Duct Blockages course?

The Q020 (DB1) Duct Blockages course is an Openreach accredited training programme designed for engineers and contractors working within the Openreach network, including contract partners. This course focuses on equipping learners with the essential skills and knowledge required to identify, excavate, and clear blockages in underground telecommunications ducts, ensuring the integrity and efficiency of the network.

Course Content

What can I expect from the Q020 (DB1) Duct Blockages training course?

Learners can anticipate a blend of theoretical instruction and practical application during this one-day course. Key components include:

  • Understanding Duct Blockages: Gaining insights into the common causes and locations of duct blockages within the Openreach underground network.
  • Excavation Techniques: Learning safe and effective methods for excavating to access blocked ducts, adhering to current working practices and quality standards.
  • Duct Repair Methods: Training on the installation of Duct Repair Kits 2A, 3A, and 4A to restore the functionality of the duct infrastructure.
  • Safety Protocols: Emphasising adherence to safety procedures to protect both personnel and infrastructure during blockage clearance activities.
  • Practical Application: Engaging in hands-on exercises that allow learners to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios under expert supervision.

Entry Requirements

Learners are required to meet the following prerequisites before enrolling in the Q020 (DB1) Duct Blockages course:

Mandatory Certifications:

  • SA006 Safe Working in Civils: Demonstrates the learner's understanding of safety protocols related to civil engineering works within the telecommunications sector.
  • NRSWA Street Works Qualifications – Units LA (Location & Avoidance of Underground Apparatus), O1 (Signing, Lighting & Guarding), O2 (Excavation in the Highway), and O3 (Reinstatement of the Highway): Ensures that learners are competent in managing street works safely and in compliance with regulations. Please note the NRSWA Operatives course covers all of these units.
  • K8 Rod & Rope: Required for those working directly for Openreach (Contract Partners), this certification covers techniques for installing cables or draw ropes in ducting using hand rodding methods.
  • PIA S7 Underground Installation: For PIA (Physical Infrastructure Access) Communications Providers, this accreditation is necessary to ensure compliance with Openreach standards for sub-duct and cable installation.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):

Learners must come equipped with the following PPE to ensure safety during the training:

  • High-Visibility (Hi-Vis) Clothing: To ensure visibility in various working environments.
  • Safety Boots: Protective footwear to safeguard against potential hazards.
  • Safety Helmet (with 4-point chin strap): To protect the head from potential impacts, with the chin strap ensuring the helmet remains securely in place.
  • Gloves: To protect hands from abrasions, cuts, and other potential injuries.
  • Eye Protection (Safety Glasses or Goggles): To shield the eyes from debris and other hazards.

Note: Failure to bring the required PPE may result in exclusion from the course, with associated charges still applicable.

Assessment

The assessment process evaluates both theoretical knowledge and practical skills:

  • Theoretical Assessment: Learners will complete a written questionnaire designed to assess their understanding of duct blockage clearance practices, safety protocols, and quality standards.
  • Practical Assessment: Learners will undertake hands-on tasks within a controlled environment, including locating, excavating, and clearing duct blockages, as well as installing appropriate repair kits. This assessment evaluates their ability to apply learned techniques, adhere to safety protocols, and meet the established quality standards during actual blockage clearance scenarios.

Certification

Upon successful completion of both the theoretical and practical assessments, learners will be awarded an Openreach-approved accreditation for the Q020 (DB1) module. This certification serves as formal recognition of the individual's competency in identifying and clearing duct blockages within Openreach's underground network, enhancing their professional credentials and expanding their career opportunities in the telecommunications sector.
