Q019 (CD1) Core Drilling

Advance Your Skills in Jointing Chamber Core Drilling

What is the Q019 (CD1) Core Drilling course?

The Q019 (CD1) Core Drilling course is an Openreach accredited training programme designed to equip engineers and operatives with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform core drilling on jointing chambers within the Openreach underground network. This course focuses on the core drilling of modular, brick, and concrete (both reinforced and unreinforced) jointing chambers to facilitate the installation of Duct 54, Duct 56, and smaller ducts.

Course Content

What can I expect from the Q019 (CD1) Core Drilling training course?

Learners can anticipate a blend of theoretical instruction and practical application during this one-day course. Key components include:

  • Documentation and Surveying: Understanding the importance of accurate documentation and preliminary surveying before commencing core drilling operations.
  • Plant Protection: Learning techniques to safeguard existing underground utilities and infrastructure during drilling activities.
  • Core Drilling Techniques: Gaining hands-on experience in core drilling various types of jointing chambers, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and quality standards.

Entry Requirements

Learners are required to meet the following prerequisites before enrolling in the Q019 (CD1) Core Drilling course:

Mandatory Safety Accreditation:

  • SA006 – Safe Working in Civils: Demonstrates the learner's understanding of safety protocols related to civil engineering works within the telecommunications sector.

Mandatory NRSWA Qualifications:

  • Unit LA (Location and Avoidance of Underground Apparatus): Ensures competency in detecting and avoiding underground utilities.
  • Unit O1 (Signing, Lighting, and Guarding): Covers the basics of setting up and maintaining safety measures for street works.
  • Unit O2 (Excavation in the Highway): Focuses on safe excavation practices in public highways.
  • Unit O3 (Reinstatement of the Highway): Teaches methods for restoring highways after excavation.
  • The NRSWA Operatives course covers all of these units.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):

Learners must come equipped with the following PPE to ensure safety during the training:

  • High-Visibility (Hi-Vis) Clothing: To ensure visibility in various working environments.
  • Safety Boots: Protective footwear to safeguard against potential hazards.
  • Safety Helmet: To protect the head from potential impacts.
  • Gloves: To protect hands from abrasions, cuts, and other potential injuries.
  • Eye Shields: Safety glasses or goggles to shield the eyes from debris and other hazards.
  • Flame Retardant Clothing: Such as leggings, tops, or overalls, to protect against fire hazards.

Note: Failure to bring the required PPE may result in exclusion from the course, with associated charges still applicable.

Assessment

The assessment process evaluates both theoretical knowledge and practical skills:

  • Theoretical Assessment: Learners will complete a written questionnaire designed to assess their understanding of core drilling practices, safety protocols, and quality standards.
  • Practical Assessment: Learners will undertake hands-on core drilling tasks within a controlled environment. This assessment evaluates their ability to apply learned techniques, adhere to safety protocols, and meet the established quality standards during actual drilling scenarios.

Certification

Upon successful completion of both the theoretical and practical assessments, learners will be awarded an Openreach approved accreditation for the Q019 (CD1) module. This certification is valid for three years and serves as formal recognition of the individual's competency in performing core drilling on jointing chambers within the Openreach underground network, enhancing their professional credentials and expanding their career opportunities in the telecommunications sector.
