Validate Your Expertise in Modular Jointing Chamber Construction with Industry Recognised Assessment

What is the Q013 (BB1M) Box Building (Modular) course?

The Q013 (BB1M) Box Building (Modular) course is an Openreach accredited training programme designed to assess and enhance the skills of experienced civils personnel in constructing modular jointing chambers. This course focuses on the excavation, base preparation, installation of modular rings, ironwork, and duct entries, ensuring compliance with Openreach's quality standards and current working practices.

Course Content

What can I expect from the Q013 (BB1M) training course?

Participants can anticipate a comprehensive assessment that includes both theoretical and practical components over a two-day period. Key areas covered include:

  • Excavation and Preparation: Evaluating the ability to safely excavate and prepare the site for the installation of modular jointing chambers.
  • Installation of Modular Chamber Rings: Assessing proficiency in installing modular chamber rings in accordance with Openreach specifications.
  • Fitting of Ironwork: Testing skills in fitting ironwork components essential for the structural integrity of the chamber.
  • Installation of Frame and Cover: Ensuring competence in installing frames and covers to complete the chamber construction.

Note: This course is assessment-only and is intended for experienced civils personnel. For those requiring training in this category, please contact the training provider for appropriate courses.

Entry Requirements

Learners are required to meet the following prerequisites before enrolling in the Q013 (BB1M) Box Building (Modular) course:

Mandatory Safety Accreditation:

  • SA006 Safe Working in Civils: Demonstrates the learner's understanding of safety protocols related to civil engineering works within the telecommunications sector.

Mandatory NRSWA Qualifications:

  • Unit LA (Location and Avoidance of Underground Apparatus): Ensures competency in detecting and avoiding underground utilities.
  • Unit O1 (Signing, Lighting, and Guarding): Covers the basics of setting up and maintaining safety measures for street works.
  • Unit O2 (Excavation in the Highway): Focuses on safe excavation practices in public highways.
  • Unit O3 (Reinstatement of the Highway): Teaches methods for restoring highways after excavation.
  • The NRSWA Operatives course covers all of these units.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):

Learners must come equipped with the following PPE to ensure safety during the assessment:

  • High-Visibility (Hi-Vis) Clothing: To ensure visibility in various working environments.
  • Safety Boots: Protective footwear to safeguard against potential hazards.
  • Safety Helmet: To protect the head from potential impacts.
  • Gloves: To protect hands from abrasions, cuts, and other potential injuries.
  • Eye Shields: Safety glasses or goggles to shield the eyes from debris and other hazards.
  • Flame Retardant Clothing: Such as leggings, tops, or overalls, to protect against fire hazards.

Note: Failure to bring the required PPE may result in exclusion from the assessment, with associated charges still applicable.

Assessment

The assessment process evaluates both theoretical knowledge and practical skills:

  • Theoretical Assessment: Learners will complete a written questionnaire designed to assess their understanding of modular jointing chamber construction practices, safety protocols, and quality standards.
  • Practical Assessment: Learners will undertake hands-on tasks within a controlled environment, including excavation, installation of modular rings, fitting of ironwork, and installation of frames and covers. This assessment evaluates their ability to apply learned techniques, adhere to safety protocols, and meet the established quality standards during actual chamber construction scenarios.

Certification

Upon successful completion of both the theoretical and practical assessments, learners will be awarded an Openreach approved certificate detailing Q013 – Box Building (Modular). This accreditation is valid for three years and serves as formal recognition of the individual's competency in constructing modular jointing chambers within the Openreach network, enhancing their professional credentials and expanding their career opportunities in the telecommunications sector.
