What is the A62/A40B Combined Course?

This comprehensive CPCS-approved course combines two pivotal roles into one efficient programme:

  • A40B Slinger/Signaller – Static Duties: Safe rigging and signalling of loads for stationary cranes.
  • A62 Crane Supervisor: Supervising lifting operations, applying regulations, managing lift plans, and ensuring site safety.

By completing both modules, you'll be certified as a CPCS Red Trained Operator for both categories, with endorsements for static crane signalling and supervisory duties

Course Content

What can I expect from the CPCS Crane Supervisor and Slinger Signaller combined course?

A40 – Slinger/Signaller (Static Duties)

  • Identify and estimate load weight, dimensions, balance, and centre of gravity
  • Select and fit correct lifting accessories; perform pre-use checks
  • Rig and secure loads safely, ensuring stability and security
  • Deliver clear hand‑and‑radio signals to guide crane operators
  • Apply hazard recognition and maintain safe working zones

A62 – Crane Supervisor

  • Explain supervisory responsibilities and relevant personnel roles (Appointed Person, Crane Operator, Slinger, etc.)
  • Interpret legislation, codes of practice, and lift-plan documentation
  • Assess crane stability, duty charts, and safety systems (e.g., RCIs, anti-collision devices)
  • Set up exclusion zones, manage team access, and mark lifting equipment placement
  • Identify underground/overhead hazards and evaluate environmental risks
  • Communicate lift procedures and conduct post-lift reporting

Entry Requirements

What are the entry requirements for the CPCS Crane Supervisor and Slinger course?

You should have:

  • Valid CITB Health, Safety & Environment test (Operative, Manager, or Supervisor), completed within the last 2 years
  • Good working-level English, both spoken and written
  • Sufficient crane-site experience, per BS 7121 standards - novice or experienced supervisors are welcome
  • Photo ID and PPE (helmet, hi-vis, safety boots) on course days

Assessment

Assessment is completed on day 5 of the course, the assessment includes:

  • Verbal theory exams covering A40 and A62 theory
  • Practical assessments, including rigging, signalling, lift planning, and zone supervision

Certification

On passing, you will receive a CPCS Red Trained Operator Card, endorsed for both A40 and A62, valid for two years

Within 2 years, you may complete NVQ Level 2 in Controlling Lifting Operations to upgrade to the CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card, valid for five years
